My passion other than professional webpage design is in 3D modelling and 2D artwork. Additionally, I am well versed in multiple software packages, including Photoshop, Illustrator and 3ds Max, all needed in the creation of 3D models. Making 3D models look real is more than just increasing polygon density, you need a good understanding of textures and lighting. In fact effective use of lighting is the true key to realism.
Equally important is attention to detail. As a 3D artist you come to realise that nothing in real life has truly square edges, or is truly perfect. Adding imperfection to a model enhances its authenticity.
I have experience in optimizing my texture space to make my game models more
efficient. Furthermore I am very experienced in uvw unwrapping. The 1200ft bridge you see
over the next few pages was made with just 3 texture maps at 1024 pixels. It included a diffuse map, normalmap and a specular map. Conversely the diffuse map was also used as a light map with skilful arrangement of assets. The bridge was made for a game called D.R.I.V.E. which is still in production by a company called Input Games.
On the next page you can see a photograph of a dilapidated hospital. This was sent to me by the director of ‘Northwest Film Asylum’ who was making a short ghost story set in the former Asylum. He wanted me to imagine how the hospital had looked when it was new, and to create a realistic 3D model of the hospital corridor (featured in the image underneath). The hardest part was working out the camera aperture so that the model I built was the same as the original image. The director was extremely impressed with my ability to reconstruct the derelict corridor into its former glory, and by its sheer realism.
My biggest recent success was when C.Tad Devlin contacted me. He is the American director who directed and produced the acclaimed movie “George of the Jungle”. He was so impressed with my 3d models and animations he personally phoned me from Washington. He wanted me to be involved in a new project he was working on. Unfortunately, funding for the project was cancelled and regrettably Tad had to abandon it. However, I still see this experience as a commendation to the quality of my work from a professional in the movie industry.
In my profession I find both Web Design and 3D modelling equally satisfying, as they constantly challenge my creative abilities to produce exciting and definitive work.
